How to Choose the Right Arrows for Your Bow

How to Choose the Right Arrows for Your Bow

Whether you're a seasoned archer or just getting started, one truth holds across every discipline: your arrows matter just as much as your bow. A perfectly tuned bow paired with the wrong arrows will still miss the mark, literally. Here's what you need to know to choose arrows that actually perform.

1. Start With Arrow Spine

Arrow spine refers to how stiff or flexible a shaft is. If your arrow is too stiff or too weak for your bow, it won't fly straight.

  • Stiffer spine = better for higher draw weights (lower number)
  • Weaker spine = better for lower draw weights (higher number)

Most manufacturers publish a spine chart, match your draw weight and arrow length to find the right spine rating. When in doubt, go slightly stiffer rather than weaker.

2. Get Your Arrow Length Right

Arrow length is measured from the bottom of the nock groove to the end of the shaft (not including the tip). A good rule of thumb: your arrow should extend 1–2 inches past your arrow rest at full draw.

Too short = dangerous. Too long = reduced performance. Get measured if you're  unsure

3. Choose Your Material

The two most common arrow materials are carbon and aluminum:

  • Carbon arrows are lightweight, durable, and consistent, great for most archers and ideal for hunting or target shooting
  • Aluminum arrows are heavier and more affordable, often preferred for indoor target shooting or beginners

For most modern setups, carbon is the go-to choice.

4. Consider Your Tip Weight

Heavier tip weight (125–150 grains) makes an arrow react weaker on the shot, which means you’ll often need a stiffer spine to keep your setup tuned correctly.

Lighter tips do the opposite, they stiffen the reaction of the arrow.

This is one of the most overlooked factors in arrow tuning and one of the biggest struggle with inconsistent groups.

5. Why Custom Arrows Beat Off-the-Shelf

Pre-packaged arrows are built for the average archer, not you. A custom arrow is cut to your exact arrow length, matched to your draw weight, and built with the components that suit your shooting style.

At Head Strong Flight, we build every arrow to order. You choose the shaft, spine, length, tip, and wrap, so what arrives at your door is dialed in before you ever nock it.
